Management Team

Steve Bares

Chairman-Steve has served as the President and Executive Director of the Memphis Bioworks Foundation since its formation in 2001. Bioworks is a unique and broad-based public/private partnership focusing on the growth of research and commercialization of life science technologies. In his career, Steve has led the development of more than 15 new technologies from concept through the entire technology development cycle to the penetration of consumer and commercial markets. Prior to Bioworks, he served in a series of executive roles at International Paper, the world’s largest forest products company. As Director of Product Development, his team launched over $500 million in new products. Before that, he was President and co-founder of Sparcom Corporation, a company specializing in handheld computer applications and wireless communication products that distributed in 26 countries.  At the beginning of his career, Steve was a Program Manager for Hewlett-Packard’s laser and inkjet printer group and part of the initial team that introduced the DeskJet family of printers, a primary driver of HP’s global profitability for many years.  AHe holds a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) both from Oregon State University and a B.Sc. in Chemistry from California State University (Humboldt).  He has authored nine patents and published numerous articles.

Pete Nelson
President-Pete has been actively involved in building the support ecosystem for new agricultural enterprises for over 10 years working with a variety of public and private sector partners. He has helped launch multiple startup companies, as well as develop sector specific initiatives to fund, incubate, and accelerate agricultural companies with high growth potential.


Margaret Oldham

Business Development-Margaret forged a career in agriculture with two major ag chem companies, and an experience sharing marketing company. Throughout her career Margaret has successfully consulted with clients including Elanco Animal Health, FMC, Syngenta, BASF, Bayer Animal Health and Deere & Co.  She has worked with clients to implement marketing strategies in animal health, crop protection and specialty crop segments. She is known as an innovative, customer-focused problem solver with the ability to take an idea from origination to standard operating procedure.  Margaret currently serves on the Agricenter International Board of Directors.

 BrownSamuelSamuel Brown
Legal Counsel & Manager, Intellectual Property-Samuel is a chemist and registered U.S. patent attorney who has a broad range of experience in matters involving patents, trade secrets, trademarks and associated licensing issues. He grew up in rural Arkansas and has a strong interest in the development and commercialization of new agricultural technology.
